A New Moon. New Beginnings. F1 Aussiedoodle Puppies.
January 29, 2025
I’m surfing Amazon Prime Video trying to find a series that I can binge for the next few weeks. I will be spending my evenings with River for a while. Her energy has waned. She is heavy with puppies (at least 7 according to the ultrasound at the vet). She now prefers the languor on the couch instead of jumping, fetching, and running.
Winter Puppy Watch
The days at school have been long. My colleagues and I have had to embrace changes in buildings, classrooms, and curriculum. On many days my cleverly curated classroom seems to encourage more chaos than intellect. It has been a challenge. I have looked forward to quiet evenings petting River, grading papers, watching TV, and waiting. This Winter Puppy Watch is therapeutic because it forces me to be still.

Contentment & Anticipation
I delight in this space between worlds—one of calm waiting and the other of tender anticipation. River nudges her head closer to me, seeking the familiar comfort of my touch, and I stroke her gently. My left hand rests on her swollen belly and I feel the gentle flutters of puppy feet. We are both content.
She exhales in a soft sigh, the kind that says everything is okay. There’s no rush, no need to hurry. The time will come when it’s meant to, and until then, she and I can just exist in this peaceful moment, waiting together, breathing together.

The world outside might be busy, and my classroom frenzied, but in this room, in this moment, there is nothing but quiet expectation. It’s a time of waiting, but not with impatience—just with a gentle patience, like the steady, quiet unfolding of the moonless night sky. River will give birth next weekend under a waxing crescent moon which will grow to full as her pups mature. (Feb. 8, 2025)

Soon, the quiet sounds of mewling will blend with the gentle shuffle of paws, and the room will be filled with a different kind of energy—the playful energy of the puppies discovering their world, their mother’s affection, and the simple, pure joy of being. But for now, the calm is everything, and it’s enough.
