What is the Worming and Vaccine Schedule for Your New Puppy?
April 16, 2025
I always enjoy watching puppies reach specific milestones in the development. Â They “spider crawl” until they can support their own weight at around two weeks. Â They are completely driven by scent until their eyes open at 10-14 days. Â At three to four weeks old, the messy introduction of solid food begins along with the weaning process. Â Puppies respond to humans and seek human interaction in the early socialization period of four to six weeks. Â And of course at around 7 weeks, puppies are given their first vaccines. Â At Doodle Patch Farm, we keep careful records of these milestones for our puppy families. Â For a pup’s first trip to the vet, the family has helpful information as well as vaccine labels and a vet’s confirmation of a healthy puppy.
When you bring your puppy home, this big change in their lives can put them under some extra stress. That extra stress can make them more vulnerable to common bacteria and microbes as well as worms. Before it’s time to take your puppy home, your puppy should have been wormed several times, and they should have their first round of puppy shots with the breeder’s veterinarian.

Keeping puppies on a proper deworming and vaccination schedule is crucial for their health and development. Here’s a general guideline, but always consult your vet for specifics based on your puppy’s health and local risks.

Deworming Schedule (Internal Parasites)
| Age | Deworming |
|---|---|
| 2 weeks | First deworming (usually pyrantel pamoate) |
| 4 weeks | Second dose |
| 6 weeks | Third dose |
| 8 weeks | Fourth dose |
| Every 2 weeks until 12 weeks | Continue deworming (if necessary) |
| 12 weeks to 6 months | Monthly deworming with flea and tick preventative |
| 6 months and older | Â Only as needed |
Tip: Â When the mama dog is given regular deworming protocols while she is nursing her pups, the puppies are less likely to test positive for parasites.

Vaccination Schedule
| Age | Vaccine(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6–8 weeks | DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) | First core vaccine |
| 10–12 weeks | DHPP booster + optional Bordetella (kennel cough) | May include Leptospirosis in some regions |
| 14–16 weeks | DHPP booster + Rabies | Final puppy booster + first rabies shot |
| 12–16 months | DHPP booster + Rabies booster | First annual |
| Annually (or every 3 years depending on vaccine type) | DHPP + Rabies | As per vet’s recommendation |
Non-core vaccines (given based on risk):
-
Bordetella – if boarding or socializing with many dogs
-
Leptospirosis – common in certain areas
-
Lyme disease – if ticks are prevalent
-
Canine Influenza – if outbreaks occur in your region
Keeping up with vaccines, especially in the first year is essential for the health and safety of your puppy as well as other animals in your home. Â Vaccines are like training programs for a puppy’s immune system. Â They teach a puppy’s immune system how to fight off diseases and prepare your puppy for a healthy future.
