English Cream Golden Retrievers- Not English nor “Cream”
March 22, 2023
I am captivated by our Golden Retrievers. Sherman’s presence depicts a powerful, masculine viral male. He is an adoring clown. Pearl, has a similar striking appearance with her heavy substantial frame, but with a more refined head. She too is a bit of a clown, very athletic and loving. She is a 70 pound lap dog. And then there’s Willow. She is the most nurturing dog in our pack. She is tenderhearted, kind, and agreeable. All three have beautiful creamy thick coats and feathery, flagging tails.
Our dogs, of course, are special to us, but English Cream Golden Retrievers are not “special” in their own right, they are just a light colored Golden Retriever. They are unusual in the color of the coat (which they have been selectively bred to pass to their offspring), but all Golden Retrievers share a common history. Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland was the first to breed Golden Retrievers in the late 18th century. They were a cross between the yellow wavy-coated retriever and the tweed water spaniel. They were bred for hunting and are still used for hunting. The AKC didn’t recognize the breed until much later in 1911. The AKC today does not recognize the color “Cream.” They are simply considered “Light Golden” and are registered as such with AKC. With attention to color genetics, and body structure, the Light Goldens have been bred in general, to have a stockier build, “boxy” head, and of course that beautiful creamy colored coat. Light Golden breeders today desire these traits in their breeding stock.
So why do so many call them English Cream if they’re not from England? In the 1900’s in England, the cream colored retrievers made their winning debut in the show ring. They became a sensation and began being imported to the United States. They were called “English Champions” and the moniker stuck. I refer to them as English Creams simply because many folks recognize the term and understand that this particular style of Golden Retriever has a different look. It’s a look I happen to love and would like to reproduce along with the quiet accepting temperament and athleticism. They’re not from England and AKC does not recognize the color “cream.” All of my retrievers are AKC registered as “Light Golden Retrievers.” If it was up to me, I’d register them as “Exceptionally Beautiful, Strong, Resilient Dogs With Generous Hearts.” That could be tricky to fit on a pedigree.

Or perhaps some day, there will be a World Kennel Club that recognizes these beautiful dogs as the BEST DOGS EVER! We just happen to have a litter of six of these exceptionally beautiful, American bred, BEST DOGS EVER! If it were up to me, every family would have a Golden Retriever and discover they truly are exceptional.
