Is an Aussiedoodle For You?
July 12, 2023

The Aussiedoodle, a mixed breed, is relatively new to the “Designer Dog” world. It’s unclear where this mixed breed originated from. Some suggest Australia as the country of origin for this mix. Today, the Aussiedoodle is found mostly in the United States. The Aussiedoodle’s (or Aussiepoo’s) distinctive scruffy face, charming looks, pleasing personality, and energy, are the result of mating a poodle with an Australian Shepherd. Both breeds are heralded for their intelligence. The Australian Shepherd is most well known for his herding ability and boundless energy.
An F1 Aussiedoodle means that it’s the first generation. The F1 is half Australian Shepherd and half Poodle. An F1b is a second generation Aussiedoodle. The “b” means the Aussiedoodle has been bred back usually to a poodle so that the second generation is more poodle than Australian Shepherd. The F1b, which is ¾ poodle and ¼ Australian Shepherd, tends to shed very little and is likely more hypoallergenic. Depending on the coloring of both parents, the first and second generation of Aussiedoodles can be very colorful. Unlike Goldendoodles who are usually cream, black, brown or red in the first generation, Aussiedoodles can be colorful in just the first generation. Because the cream, black, brown or red are the dominant colors of the Golden Retriever, first generation Goldendoodles are typically cream, black, brown or red. It requires breeding the first generation back to a colorful poodle to produce colorful variations in a Goldendoodle. F1b goldendoodles have more color.
I adore Goldendoodles and Golden Retrievers. But when we are expecting a litter of Aussiedoodles, we eagerly wait for colorful pups. It’s a “Forrest Gump” kind of whelping: Like a box of chocolates, we never know what we’re going to get!” I also don’t need to put identifying collars on the pups to be able to tell them apart. There is so much variety! We usually have merles, tri-colors, tuxedo patterns, phantoms, and parti patterns. They always surprise us and as a owner you will have a distinctive looking puppy and later dog.
We have two Australian Shepherd females. Luna is a working dog (American Stock Dog Registry). She’s long-legged and lean. River is built more for the show ring. She has a stockier build with a beautiful fluffy full coat. Both are blue merles with tan points (lots of chrome). They require frequent brushing and shed a great deal. Both of our girls are highly intelligent, energetic, and eager to please. They love to run with us, chase a ball or frisbee, and herd our grandchildren.
An Australian Shepherd is not for everyone. Their energy must be channeled in a productive way, or they will choose ways to channel their energy by chewing your couch or shoes! They also shed. . . a lot!
We have three Poodles: Two Standard Poodles and one Miniature Poodle. These boys are energetic, but not as energetic as our Australian Shepherds. The boys are very smart, focus on their handler, love to please, and are more inclined to lie at our feet throughout the day. They have dense curly coats with colorful Parti patterns (big spots). Because poodles don’t shed, they require professional grooming every six weeks.
Poodles are not for everyone. They have a distinctive look and their coats are high maintenance. With attention to health, temperament, and conformation, the pairing of a Poodle with an Australian Shepherd can bring out the best of each breed. This combination can temper the high energy of the Australian Shepherd and produce a coat that sheds less and is more hypoallergenic. The mating of a Poodle with an Australian Shepherd can create “The Einstein of Mixed Breeds.”
Our first Aussiedoodle was Pixel. I chose her mainly because of her looks. She reminded me of a Bearded Collie or Old English Sheepdog. She was absolutely adorable. I fell in love with her easy going personality. When we went to see Pixel for the first time, two children were pushing Pixel in a baby stroller. When Pixel would attempt to jump out, the kids would promptly push her back into the stroller. Pixel would comply for a while longer. Pixel was a pleaser. We had to have her. She became an exceptional Frisbee dog, running partner, kayaker, and hiker. She was the perfect dog for an active family.

Emma is our current Aussiedoodle. She too is eager to please, has a moderate energy level, and loves people. She gets along with all of our dogs. She’s a great running companion, loves to fetch, and sheds little. She’s a red merle with one blue eye and one green eye. When we go places, people ask, “What kind of dog is that?” And then they say, “She’s beautiful!” I admit, I enjoy when people compliment my dogs. Doodle Patch Farm Aussiedoodles get attention.
If you’re an active person or family, an Aussiedoodle could be for you. If you are looking for an energetic, loyal companion that has a distinctive scruffy look with a colorful coat pattern, an Aussiedoodle might be the perfect fit.
Here at Doodle Patch Farm in South West Ohio, our Poodles, Australian Shepherds, and Aussiedoodles are fully health tested, beautiful dogs. Doodle patch Farm puppies turn heads. A pick list has been started for Luna and Jett’s litter (born July 5th, 2023). A pick list allows those who want a puppy from a given litter to get in line to make their selection. After the first person makes their selection, then the next person can make their selection and so forth. Some want to pick from only the males, while others want to pick only from the females. Some are more interested in their look than their gender. The puppies’ personalities and their markings become more evident each week as the puppies mature. We like to see more personality and coloring as they open their eyes and we can get to know them better. Some people on the pick list go ahead and make a selection in the first week or two, but sometimes they want to wait a couple weeks. We have determined that a pick list is a fair way to show who is committed to the selection of a puppy. We require a deposit in order to be placed on the pick list.
