The Puppies Are Coming! The Puppies Are Coming!
February 13, 2023
As an equestrian, I imagine Paul Revere’s midnight ride to begin as a tremulous mounting on a fidgety horse, swift kick to the sides, and a launched
gallop into the night. Revere, carrying news that British soldiers stationed in Boston were about to march to the countryside to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock, must have ridden with fury; his overcoat billowing, one hand gripping the reins, and the other hand holding his tricorn hat. The townspeople who heard the echo of hoofbeats on cobblestones likely slammed shutters, gathered munitions, quieted babies, and whispered conspiratorial plans in the dark. The chill of terror shrouded every household on that April night in 1775.
On this mid February evening, Doodle Patch Farm is sounding the alarm, “The Puppies Are Coming! The Puppies Are Coming!” Like the Patriots prepared for British troops, we are preparing for an army of puppies. Two whelping pens have been assembled, puppy pads
and towels have been sanitized. We have equipped the armory with gloves, iodine, hemostats, thermometers, hand sanitizer, alcohol wipes, vet wrap and other tools. We have prepared our team of soldiers, picket, and sentry for the long watch ahead.
Ultrasounds have revealed that
Willow and Sherman may deliver up to 13 Golden Retriever puppies. Pearl and Auggie will likely deliver 7-8 Goldendoodle puppies. And to complicate this puppy attack, the entire platoon is predicted to arrive on the same day!
Like Paul Revere, I feel a sense of urgency to mobilize. I am anxiously doting on Pearl and Willow as their swollen girths leave them panting and sluggish. My mind is strategizing a schedule for cleaning, feeding and monitoring each puppy squad. Redcon is set for the busy days ahead.
They all want to help spread the news.
The puppies will likely be born the week after President’s Day (Feb 28, 2023). It may be fitting to name some of the pups after past presidents: Lincoln, Washington, Madison, Monroe, Fillmore, etc. Maybe Paul Revere should be included. His legacy is as well known as any president’s.
I imagine myself riding my horse the same 12.5 miles of Paul Revere’s ride, but bringing an urgent message of a completely different tenor. “The Puppies Are Coming! The Puppies Are Coming!” The word needs to spread. Perhaps by horseback, perhaps on foot, perhaps smoke signals. Those are hardly efficient tactics anymore. Paul Revere probably rode at a 12-15 mile an hour pace. Today, 100 Megabits per second is crucial! Facebook, Instagram, Tick Tock, and Twitter will serve as our Paul Revere to share, share, share, comment, like, instant message, email, and tweet. Raise the alarm: “The Puppies are Coming! The Puppies are Coming!”
