Where Have All the Standard Sized Dogs Gone?

Why Choose a Larger Doodle? A Closer Look at Standard Goldendoodles and Aussiedoodles
When Raven and Mack were expecting their first litter of Standard F1b Goldendoodles last fall, we were amazed by the number of inquiries we received—not just from local families here in Ohio, but from people all over the country. One person even told us, “I can’t find a single Standard Goldendoodle breeder in my state!” While we know there are other breeders out there, it’s true that Standard Goldendoodle and Aussiedoodle breeders seem to be few and far between.
Mini Doodles have certainly surged in popularity—understandably so. They’re great for smaller living spaces, easier to travel with, and their cuddly, teddy bear-like appearance makes them hard to resist. But for the right family or individual, a standard-sized Doodle can be an even better fit.

Bigger Dogs, Calmer Vibes
One thing many people don’t realize is that larger dogs are often calmer and more laid-back than their smaller counterparts. While every dog is an individual, there’s often an inverse relationship between a dog’s size and its energy level: smaller dogs can be surprisingly high-energy and intense, while larger dogs tend to be more mellow.
We’ve had several older adults and folks with mobility challenges reach out asking for Mini Doodles—understandably hoping for a smaller, more manageable companion. But here’s something to consider: puppies of any size can be tripping hazards. A mature, standard-sized dog may actually offer more stability and is less likely to dart underfoot.
Space, Travel, and Practicalities
Yes, Mini Doodles have their perks. They’re easier to lift, transport, and groom. They typically cost a bit less to feed and maintain, and often have longer lifespans. If you live in a city or a smaller home, a Mini might seem like the obvious choice.
However, Standard Doodles bring a different kind of charm. They make wonderful companions for those who love the outdoors—hiking, camping, biking, running/jogging or even just lounging by the fire. A larger dog can carry its own gear on a trail, keep up on longer adventures, and for many, simply feels like a better fit for an active or rural lifestyle.
What About Coat Types?
Just like Minis, Standard Doodles can have a range of coat types—from straight to wavy to curly. It may take up to a year to know exactly what kind of coat your pup will have. F1b Doodles (like those from Raven and Mack) tend to have curlier or wavier coats due to their 75% Poodle genetics, while F1 Doodles may have straighter or slightly wavy coats. All Doodles require regular grooming regardless of size.
Finding the “Just Right” Size – Goldilocks Style
Think of it like this: just like Goldilocks found the bed that was just right, there’s a Doodle size that will be perfect for you. If your idea of a perfect evening is curling up in a comfy chair with a good book and a loyal companion snuggled at your feet, a Standard Doodle might be the ideal fit. If you’re the adventurous type who loves being active outdoors, a Standard Goldendoodle or Aussiedoodle will be more than happy to keep pace.

And guess what? Raven and Mack are expecting again! Raven is a 65-pound F1 Standard Goldendoodle, and Mack is her repeat partner. Their last litter produced stunning, affectionate, and intelligent puppies—many of whom will likely exceed 85 pounds at full maturity. We were so thrilled with the results, we decided to pair them again.
